A great 8-bit video from New York’s MTA showing how incidents on PT can quickly lead to long delays plus what can be done to mitigate them. Of course we don’t quite have the same frequencies as the New York subway but the same principles apply. Warning, the music is quite catchy.

The video comes from this post which also has more information on how the subway performs and what is being done to reduce delays

  1. I wonder what would that video look like and how well would NY subways perform, if they took the Outer Link spacing algorithm instead…For those who don’t know, the Outer Links have a time padding at a few scheduled stops, so that most of the time they end up waiting at that stop up to 10 minutes, while passengers are stuck inside. This is a poor attempt at making sure that the buses run are evenly spaced, but it frustrates the hell of out passengers who are on the bus forced to wait at these special stops. There must be a better way!?

    1. yeah that is a total wind-up. The better way, of course is buslanes that enable much more predictability to journey times, regardless of traffic conditions, and therefore reduce the need for padding.
