These images were developed by merging together various historic black and white photographs (all from the “Sir George Grey Special Collection” – Auckland Library) with contemporary colour photographs taken at the same location.
The black and white photographs were taken between the years 1900 to 1940, and cover a number of areas of the city and the outlying suburbs. The colour photographs were all taken in early 2015.
The intention of these images is to use photography to help show how much has changed – or not changed – over almost one hundred years by focusing on locations that are familiar to Aucklanders.
It is interesting to think that the people, horses and trams seen in these images passed by around a century ago where we walk and drive today.

Yeah I always wish to myself that they just filled it in and made the CMJ/North-Western in that area covered in. Would open heaps of space for parks and maybe some extra housing. Probably really expensive to do though haha. Bloody highways are ridiculous waste of space and generator of unwanted noise all to move a bunch of SOV’s…
Yeah you wouldn’t be standing in the middle of that road these days… Not even a pedestrian “refuge” unfortunately… lol.
I live in an apartment building, just behind one of the ones in the picture, this is so cool to see. I wish Newton Road was still so pedestrian friendly.
Wow, a nice little street absolutely destroyed in the name of pumping cars onto the motorway. Pretty depressing to see, villas replaced with generally low quality light industry and car yards with absolutely no pedestrian amenity. Auckland really did sacrifice itself for the suburban car-centric dream of the 50s.

These are great but rather than a fixed image half and half I would to see a sliding bar so you can go back and forth between the two whole images. For example in the one above I really want to see the rest of the old Newton Rd….?
or if thats too complicated, even a side by side would be nice 😛

Not sure if they have been posted before, but if you search the Libraries website that Tim has linked to above, for references “NZ Map 5977d”, “NZ Map 5977l” and “NZ Map 5977m”, you’ll find some quite striking images of the motorway construction in the 1970s through Newton and Karangahape. You get a clear – actually quite shocking – impression of how swathes of the city were basically scrubbed out of existence.
