  1. Nice. So, what’s the plan for Alice after this project?
Surely there are many other projects around the place that she can be used for…

    1. Alice’s future post WRR tunnels? Retirement then recyclement

Seriously, its been sold back to the makers for scrap value as it will be seriously buggered once its done nearly 5kms of tunnels.

  2. Would be great for them to retain the segment plant for the next tunnel project which isn’t too far off.

    1. The precast is all being made in east tamaki, at a newly built plant next door to lion brewery. As well as tunnel segments, they are doing bridge beams, panels, etc.
I‘d expect the TBM could be refurbished at minimal cost. Its built to industrial standards and not operating for many months. Teeth are all replaceable

  3. At least those people living right next to the new roads will be pleased that their house prices will go up; now that they have such great new transport links.

    1. This project is doing nothing for the local Waterview neighbourhood.
There are no additional on/off ramps. Not at Gt Nth Rd Waterview/Pt Chev interchange, not from the intersection at Gt Nth & Blockhouse Bay Rds, not at New North Rd.
To get to/from the tunnels, local people will have to go to the existing interchanges at St Lukes, Rosebank Rd, or Maioro St.
Traffic on Gt Nth Rd is not predicted to change much, and only increase more in future.
Noise, visual pollution and ventilation stack emissions are hardly going to make house prices go up.
A couple of hundred metres of bus lane citybound only, just prior to the Gt Nth Rd interchange is hardly a great new transport link

      1. I detect a bit of sarcasm in Harry’s comment. If Dante lived today I think his inferno would include roads.

        1. I’m sure if the locals wanted connections to this section of the motorway, they would have voted for the cheaper above-ground option…

        2. South facing ramps from New North Road could have been built, prior to moving the portal further south to avoid difficult ground conditions.
Early options for the SH20-SH18 interchange had local on/off ramps.
There was an option of underground on/off ramps from near the intersection of Blockhouse Bay Road & Gt Nth Rd.

Some locals were appalled at the cost of the tunnels and did indeed petition for it to all be surface.

  4. This interchange will inevitably end up with ramp signals as per Manukau. An elevated curve with a high speed camber will feel pretty precarious to queue on. Hope they’re planning to have three queueing lanes else the tailback will stretch to Onehunga

  5. I believe there is a well used tunnel boring machine (a lot smaller than Alice) sitting deep under the mud of Mairangi bay where the treated clean water outlet from the Albany treatment ponds tunnel emerges
in the Rangi channel. It is my understanding that the plant was left there.
