These pictures come from reader Jonty showing the NZTA’s new lighting scheme on the Harbour Bridge. The NZTA are usually quite good at providing information on changes like this but I haven’t seen anything this time so I’m not sure if it’s a permanent thing or not.

Overall I think it looks like a great addition and long overdue. It could also be important as from memory the lighting proposed for Skypath was a source of complaint from some local residents. If the NZTA have introduced lighting then that hopefully reduces those complaints.

  1. Very cool, but they should stick to one, maybe two colours at a time. I think coordinating with the sky tower would be a really good idea too.

  2. I think it’s a temporary trial – the light fixtures and power feeds look to be temporarily attached, at least for now.

Just the eastern side (visible from the city centre) is lit up.

  3. Its about time the Auckland Harbour Bridge is illuminated at night like every other major bridge around the world. Well done NZTA. Make it a permanent feature and light the western side as well.

  4. Is it on every night? Im looking from the south-eastern side of the bridge (freemans bay) but all i can see is the usual street lamps and car headlights.

    1. I took the photos when I first saw the lights, which was late on Wednesday night. Since then it’s been dark!

  5. Someone needs to cut the power to Auckland so we never have to see this blinking, tacky, try hard oriental monstrosity ever again. Im ashamed for the men that lost their lives building our bridge that their memory be disgraced with such utterly tasteless frivolity.

    1. What does ‘oriental monstrosity’ even mean? Really need to ask yourself what is making you so angry, something much closer to most likely. Please get help.
