We’ve talked before about the sneckdown. Of course in Auckland it doesn’t snow so we aren’t able to get them as described by Streetfilms . However as Pippa Coom suggests, perhaps we can use the results of last night’s storm to work out where we can reclaim road space.
Is this the #Auckland version of the #sneckdown @transportblog @streetfilms? Storm debris on Franklin Rd pic.twitter.com/BZ0YzUYWN9

That looks just like a cycle lane sized space on Franklin Rd
If you haven’t seen a sneckdown before watch this video
Looks like a cycle lane?
‘sized’
Clearly if they pushed the edge line tight in against the car parking you’d also gain an extra foot of cycle space there too.
Plus there’s an unnecessary median so heaps of space for a high quality cycle lane, rather than just some paint.
+1
Parking protected bike lane maybe?
Brilliant way to see unused [by cars] space!
When’s the upgrade to Franklin that AT promised going to start?
The much needed upgrade of Franklin Road has been postponed for many years as it has been in the too hard basket (and Auckland Transport didn’t inherit a legacy budget from Auckland City Council).
In our Waitemata Local Board Agreement 14/15 we are advocating to Auckland Transport to “Undertake the planned upgrade of Franklin Road including road resurfacing, undergrounding of services, footpath upgrade, pedestrian crossings, cycle path and on road parking and to provide for safe and continuous walking and cycling pathways from Ponsonby Road to Victoria Park including continuous pedestrian facilities (i.e. an unbroken footpath on both sides of the road) across all side streets, driveways and intersections (for example by installing raised tables)”
The good news is that Auckland Transport has recently put the project back on the table and is revisiting a design from 2011. We should know in the next month a timetable for the upgrade.
Great news – plenty of room for safe Copenhagen cycle lanes on Franklin Road and it will calm the crazy (car) traffic to boot. Crickey a win-win-win situation! Which I guess means AT will ignore it and do… nothing.
This was awful to cycle over. I found myself pushing out into the flow of traffic more frequently just to avoid the *thwang* of twigs under the bottom bracket and chainstays.
Definitely enough space for a separated cycle lane solution here, but two-wheeled traffic can’t clear the debris the way the cars can – which was an evident post-storm issue on cycleways city-wide.
