Some photos I took recently of Wynyard, a development that we as a city got right and which helps to show we can create an awesome urban environment. The place will only get better as more development occurs in the coming years.

One of my favourite things about Wynyard is how it’s been designed to appeal to kids too, something we need to do more of in the city.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the plans for the next stages of Wynyard which should be out soon.

  1. Now all they need to do is:
    1. stop the cars from speeding along Jellicoe like its Brands Hatch
    2. make a proper taxi rank along Jelliecoe that does not impede pedestrian and car flow
    3. stop the illegal parking in the are by the restaurant owners/staff

Great that we finally got our bus stop!! woohoo!!

    1. Brands Hatch has elevation and camber – Wynyard Quarter is flat and boring. You’re after Silverstone 😀

Although making more of the tram down there would be great, such a shame it’s happening at a snail’s pace.

  2. I have always liked the silos and fishing boats and even the fuel tanks. It gives you the feeling that something is actually going on in this area. The trees are an improvement but the open space landscaping runs the risk of making feel like something used to happen here. I hope they can keep the working waterfront feel otherwise it will become twee.

    1. As far as I am aware, marine industry along Beaumont and fishing berths along Marine Events Centre are both zoned to stay.

    1. Yes unfortunately that play area is a temporary intervention and is planned to be removed, but who knows they may have had a rethink as there were a lot of calls to keep something similar, if not exactly this, exactly there.

      1. and that basketball court? will somebody think of the basketball court? It’s awesome to have it there, just wish it was a full sized one. Of course just bulldoze it, we like cricket and beer here.

      2. They’d better have a rethink. Removing the public playspace in favour of private commercial buildings/apartments would be regressive.

  3. Playgrounds dont generate jobs and profits. Commercial buildings do. Of course we will buldoze the playground. Profits before people!

    1. Careful, the National Party will be furious if you start releasing their campaign slogans early.

      Others to avoid are:

“Did you enjoy the 1950s? We’re bringing them back!”
“We’re rich, and you’re not, so bad luck” and of course
      “Let them eat cake”

      Should be a great election.

  4. I love the shared spaces but with kids hard for them to know where walking is ok and when you have to be careful. Roads and cars do suddenly appear – quite deceptive. Overall love the design.
