Railway lines to remind us of the days when Auckland was a thriving centre of commerce and trade.
….and when the entire central city waterfront was closed to the public.
Because now it’s a backwater. A sort of southern hemisphere Detroit, but with even less commerce and trade.
In what way is Auckland at all like Detroit? The population is increasing, the economy is growing, property prices are high and the inner city has undergone many positive changes over the past decade.
It’s been said many times, but the Internet needs a “sarcasm” font.
Apparently it does. I was reacting to the original commenter’s use of the word “was”.
Population is related to growth, which is vaguely related to opportunity and income. From time to time I like to check the Auckland population figures here: http://books.mongabay.com/population_estimates/full/Auckland-New_Zealand.html In 1955, Auckland’s population was less than that of modern day greater Wellington or greater Christchurch. The pre-growth pre-Harbour Bridge pre-motorway Auckland was sort of small and quaint, and not some golden age of commerce and trade.
there is another brand new electric train in this moment under the sun just a wharf to the east from there. Arrived this morning
Ferry is a good option today with Auckland’s transport system completely screwed yet again.
woah – love these – super sharp, the sun makes a huge difference, I miss Auckland
