The Campaign For Better Transport is getting into the spirit of what has so far been a lacklustre run up to the Auckland Council elections.  They’ve lined up the Mayoral candidates to put forward their transport vision at a public meeting next week:

  • Auckland’s Transport Future
  • Wednesday 11th September, 6:45pm
  • Pioneer Women’s and Ellen Melville Hall, Freyberg Square, Auckland Central

Confirmed candidates include current Mayor Len Brown, John Palino, John Minto, Paul Duffy and Rev Uesifili Unasa.

The format is each speaker gets 10 minutes to put forward their transport policies for Auckland, followed by questions from the floor.

It will also be your chance to get the rundown on the Congestion Free Network from ATB’s Patrick Reynolds.

The event is free and all members of the public are welcome.  Seats can be reserved via http://aucklandstransportfuture.eventbrite.co.nz/

  1. Sounds interesting!

BTW (and apologies for the thread hijack) there is also a meeting the next day (Thursday 12th September) about the new airport flight paths.
It’s at the Royal Oak Baptist Church hall, 1 Erson Ave Royal Oak, from 6 to 7.30.
Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga and Paul Goldsmith’s names were on the ad in the East and Bays Courier, so I presume they’ll be there.
Perhaps worth going if you’ve noticed increased noise in your neighbourhood…

    1. The Edenite’s like to fly overseas but they don’t want the planes to actually fly over their houses. They would rather they flew over poorer suburbs.

    2. This is NIMBYism at its best, there have been no increased flights, it is simply that the residents have been told there is so now think that is the case. I live out East and we have the planes all day and night for years, it doesn’t bother us.

Have a read of http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=11116530 for some facts. (not that I often agree with Rudman on anything)

As Matt said the only reason you have noticed the noise is you have been told it is happening.

    3. Agree with ejtma.. I live under the flight path in the eastern suburbs and it doesn’t bother me at all. On the contrary I actually quite like it, a reminder of our connection with the rest of the world. On the other hand I work next to the Southern Motorway.. single glazed building, nothing but a wire fence to screen the road noise.. or the fumes..

Besides, Glen, have you stopped to reflect on why the flight path changes are being proposed?

      1. BigWheel and all,
Apologies if the last line of my post was poorly framed, but FWIW I don’t have much of an opinion either way about the aircraft noise issue. I live in Ellerslie and can hear some plane noise but it doesn’t really bother me. What does bother me a little is the partial and at times hysterical information from everyone in this discussion. Hence I thought it’d be good to share news of the meeting to people who want to find out more…

    1. Agree. Airways’ stance is predictable but I’m keen to get more details from them.
What position, if any, that local politicians take is something I’m keen to hear too.
