The development of Auckland and every city is intricately linked to its transport network. This video, created for heritage week by the Auckland Council, looks at the history of Albert-Eden local board area and one of the things I feel comes through was just how important the transport network, in particular the trams were in their development.
Great stuff. Loved seeing the days of the old Cabbage Tree Swamp…
Interesting to wonder how different things would look had a different path been taken regarding the trams. However the end of the video suggests we are still heading down a different, stupider path at least for now. I for one would have trouble cracking a grin on the occasion of the first sod being ripped up in that much used and much loved parkland. Oh well.
Trams eh? Sounds like a fairly green transport idea…
Great doco. In the final minute with the 4 politicians all digging I had trouble deciding which was “the first sod”!
I just love stuff like this, thanks for posting.
Terrible to see all those trams, cycles and pedestrians getting in the way of cars.
I actually saw smiling CHILDREN on bikes on Sandringham Road. Outrageous.
