This is a reminder for what looks to be an excellent event happening this Sunday. It will be really interesting to see Queen St converted for pedestrian use and something I hope we continue to see much more of.

For the first time ever, from Customs Street to Wyndham Street, we’re kicking out the cars and turning Queen Street into one big sports park!

Come and have a go at football, cricket, cycling, squash, zumba and more. Experts will be on hand to give you a few tips and there will be heaps of competitions.

All the Queen Street shops and eateries will be open and there will be picnic spots on the street. You’re only a stone’s throw from Auckland’s new world-class art gallery and the waterfront, so there’s heaps to do in town for a day.

Check Newstalk ZB from 8am on the day in case of rain.

Getting there

Visit the MAXX website to check the bus, ferry and train timetables.

If you’re driving, leave the car a little way from the city and walk in, or make use ofAuckland Council’s $2.50/hr parking at Victoria Street and the Downtown car parks.

One thing to note though is that due to some pretty poor planning, all trains on the weekend will be replaced by buses for electrification upgrade works.

    1. Will the fire brigade attend to retrieve kites from building decoration like the clock on the right? Or verandahs, cranes, or street lights?

I’m an occasional kite flier. Any person getting within about 50 meters downwind of me is well advised to scatter, screaming. Also I hit a bird in mid-air once.

On a sensible note, I’m out of town at the weekend. Would someone take and post a few photos?

  1. Sadly, I fear this will be a lost opportunity.

We could have 50,000 people down there if PT access was better. Imagine the reaction from the retailers – they’ll be criticising the council for being slack on not closing the street down sooner!

But with trains down, people will attempt to drive, there will be gridlock in the surrounding streets and a lack of parking, and they will turn around and go home. Worse, the anti-pedesrianisation brigade will claim that the gridlock is what happens when Queen St is closed to the car and that the council would be CBD-suicide to consider it.

    1. Yeah a bit silly that this is happening on a weekend when the trains aren’t running. Oh well, hopefully the weather will be good and plenty of people turn up.

    1. I hope it works. I’m not around, so I haven’t seen the advertising. I suspect that good weather will play the bigger part of its success.

  2. See, this is the result of high density living. Sheesh, just move to the suburbs already, if the blandness of the concrete jungle is too much to bear. There are hundreds of playing fields all around Auckland!

    Yes, tounge in cheek…
