A great photo I snapped in one of ARTA’s meeting rooms this evening:
It was taken at the opening of the Morningside station a few months back, with Steven Joyce, Oscar Kightley and some other guy. The caption reads:
Trains are awesome, love Oscar.
I wonder if he got the message?
Good to see ARTA have a sense of oumour. Wonder if thats the first time Joyce rode on a train. Or did he just sit in the cab and not go anywhere. Reminds me of the story of when Maurice Williamson was Minister of Transport, and when he was 2 years into the job Williamson admitted he had never been on a train. So Tranz Rail boss Francis Small took him for a ride in a passenger carriage halfway up the NIMT and back.
And herein lies the problem with transport planning in NZ, we have people who literally have no clue making the decisions. Why does a radio station operator become the transport minister? How can we take the government of the day seriously when the only attribute they need to be spending billions on dollars on transport is that they have a drivers licence?
I could imagine a few good (de)motivational Photoshops coming out of this picture…
