Courtesy of Andrew, from the  Silverstream blog, we have a sneak peek at what electrification will look like.  For a start, here we are looking towards Glen Eden Station:GlenEden-el Next up we’re looking towards Swanson Station:Swanson-el And Middlemore Station on the southern line:Middlemore-el And finally, Papakura Station:Papakura-elIt seems like quite a nice and simple design is being used for the ‘poles’, and we’re not getting the somewhat dominant full overhead supports that can look pretty ugly indeed. Of course, the wires are a bit of visual clutter, but in terms of what they represent, they are very beautiful indeed.

I’m looking forward to seeing them go up!

  1. Thanks for the plug 🙂

Looks like we won’t be completely escaping those full overhead supports – there’s one in the Middlemore mock-up photo.

Going by that it looks like the older or narrower profile side platform stations – Kingsland, Baldwin Ave, and Middlemore as above.

  2. looks like what i was visioning them to look like since the electrification project was picking up traction so i guess me the project engineers were thinking a like

  3. Nice to see center poles in the renderings for Glen Eden and Swanson. Usually difficult to accommodate on legacy lines but used on both new lines in Perth. They look far more elegant than separate poles on each side of the tracks. When the western line was double tracked was sufficient space left between the tracks for this along the whole line?

Rail corridors are usually not the most scenic places at the best of times so adding wires is a bit of a non issue.

  4. Yeah they don’t seem too obtrusive. Not sure about the spacing between tracks on the western line.

I wonder how many people will go “hey I thought they would do 3rd rail!”
