I am up north on holiday at the moment so don’t expect any posts for a few more days I am sorry.

Interestingly, on our way up north we found a way to bypass Warkworth by going via a few gravel roads behind Puhoi. I wonder if it would make some sense to seal those roads as a quick and simple way to provide an alternative to the highly congested SH1 through there.

  1. How about a simple by pass about Warkworth? That and a new link to the Matakana road that doesn’t go right through the guts of the town would be a lot cheaper than any of the alternatives I have seen.

BTW- Worth looking at what the Land Transport engineers are going to do to the Warkworth township. The are about to build a six lane highway complete with mega intersection right smack through the middle of town. Good luck walking your dog, being a kid on a scooter or even a mobility scooter accross that great expanse of asphalt and signalling!

  2. Yes a simple by pass would do much better than a six lane highway through town hope your not telling the truth about that because it would truly horrible for the locals living there have a nice holiday Jarbs mine will be coming to an end soon and I’ll be returning to Auckland

I kid you not. You may want to ask RDC about some of the trees State Highways are planning to take out. Locals tell me the Bledisloe tree donated by Lord Bledisloe at the entrance of town is for the chop or relocation. I’m pretty sure you they will be able to get around the RMA provisions for this.

  4. It does seem very strange to widen the road through Warkworth when multiple bypass options are being looked at. While I am not in favour of the full Puhoi-Wellsford “holiday highway”, I do think a Warkworth bypass, rather than widening, is necessary.

I didn’t know about the Bledisloe Tree. Given that works are underway that seems to suggest consent has been granted.

  5. Pardon an Aussie’s ignorance – but traffic problems in NZ is a little hard to believe! Our road planners here are nutters – building 2 laned motorways for a city of 5 million people! Its a joke and causes 1000s of hours of lost time and the unnecesary waste of fuel each and every day. We run a limousine service here in Sydney (www.limousineline.com.au) and our productivity is shot to pieces. We can’t manage the 11km trip between Sydney Airport & the City and back to the airport in under an hour & 15 minutes during our ever-lengthening peak hours.

I was speaking to a Kiwi I picked up today at the Airport and he told me of your fuel prices at $1.70 p/litre – that’s tough compared to our $1.10 p/litre.

I guess we could always move to Saudi Arabia throw on our best Islamic dress, pray a couple of times a day and pay 20cents a litre there!!

    All the best!
