New Years Eve the perfect time to trial Queen Street pedestrianisation

In late November, the council voted to proceed with investigating a plan that would reshape the city centre to focus on pedestrians rather than cars. One especially exciting development was the addition of the following motions, at the behest of councilors: c)          endorse the use of trials and “tactical urbanism” initiatives in order to test and consult on the initiatives in clause b) ii) and iii) above d)         request staff to trial an “open streets” initiative in the City Centre and work with interested Local Boards to trial it in other centres We have many ideas about how where these trials could take place and it is great to see a trial of High Street proceeding yesterday, as part of the “Late Night Christmas” street festival, thanks to Heart of the City.…

Are we getting the Public Space Outcome at Britomart the City Needs?

One of best things Auckland is getting as a result of the great upgrade that is the City Rail Link is, at last, a proper urban public square in precisely the right place. The section of Lower Queen St in front of the grand old CPO that is now the Britomart train station, once void of all vehicles, will become the most important bit of paving in the city.…

Queen St open for people

At the Santa Parade just over a week ago one thing I was extremely happy to hear was that Auckland Transport left Queen St open for people for a few hours after the parade instead of squeezing thousands back on to the footpath so the road could be reopened to what would have been a significantly fewer vehicles like they’ve done in previous years.…

Queen St Transit Mall – Why Wait for LRT?

On Thursday the Herald reported the latest on Auckland Transport’s plans for Light Rail across the isthmus which came following an update to the Council’s Infrastructure Committee. From the presentation online there doesn’t seem to be much new other than what we’ve already seen and unfortunately the meeting wasn’t one filmed under the council’s new webcasting service so we can’t see exactly what was said.…
