Who pays when roads and parking are “free” to use?
This guest post by George Weeks originally appeared on The Spinoff and is reposted with kind permission.
It might seem like a good deal, but toll-free roading results in congestion and free parking leads to frustrated circling. Drivers end up paying with their precious time – and the social cost is huge. …
How to get to the beach (without ruining it for everyone)
A bunch of us got talking about recent stories about getting to the beach, or having difficulties doing so, and Jolisa and Marita put together this post as a result.
With the weather – and the water – warming up, Aucklanders are flocking to the beaches (including some newly swimmable ones, hooray!).…
AT’s heavy-handed enforcement… of the WRONG problem
Below is a section about berms from the Auckland Transport website, altered ever so slightly. Can you guess which key element has been changed? Parking on berms
Residents are not permitted to park on berms. On rare occasions permission may be given but this requires an application to Auckland Transport for a licence specific to their circumstances.…

The Low Cost of Ending the High Cost of Free Parking
This is a guest post from reader Stephen Davis and was originally posted here.
New Zealanders are probably most familiar with the Resource Management Act (or “RMA” for short) as being about protecting the environment: when it’s discussed by politicians, it’s almost always either being decried as having environmental protections that are too onerous and stand in the way of progress, or alternatively being supported as the main defence of environmental health.…
Video – the high cost of free parking
We have talked about the stupidity of parking requirements for as long as this blog has existed. Here’s a recent good video from Vox that runs through the key points through an interview with parking guru Donald Shoup. We should soon be hearing about where the Environment Court landed in relation to an appeal by retailers against Council to reject applying minimums for retail activities.…
Cashout your parking – a free election policy for the taking
Yesterday we hit election silly season and transport was the first cab off the rank with plenty of infrastructure promises included. But along with the big ticket items, there’s often a lot of small things that could be done to improve transport.…
ATs Parking App is live
The days of parking meters are numbered now that AT have released their parking app.
Back in May last year, Auckland Transport released a video about their new parking strategy and in one part of it they mentioned they were working on a mobile app to let you pay for on-street parking without having to go to a machine to buy a ticket.…
AT’s Parking App delayed
Auckland Transport’s interesting looking parking app appears to have been delayed again. If you don’t recall, the app was first mentioned last year in a video about their recently adopted (and good) Parking Strategy. In the video, it appears that you simply tag on within the app when you arrive and tag off again when you get back to your car so no need to fiddle around with parking machines or paper tickets.…

This is a guest post from reader Andy C
According to media reports, there has been ‘an outbreak of tyre slashing’ in the residential roads around Wellington airport recently. And the cause – people parking legally (yes, within the law) on residential streets.…
