Learning from LA – PT marketing
Similar to yesterday’s post on New York, this is a great little video on the steps that Los Angeles’s transport agency has taken to improve the marketing of public transport – and to make public transport “cool”. A couple of things really stood out for me: the cleverness of using different coloured buses to indicate different service types – such as express services versus local services and some of the fantastic artwork that fills their train stations.…
August PT Patronage – pretty stunning
ARTA have (finally) got around to uploading the August 2010 Monthly Business Report to their website, and the patronage statistics are pretty damn impressive. Here’s a quick overview of what’s in the report:
Some of those numbers are pretty impressive – 7.8% patronage increase overall, 17% increase in rail patronage and a very healthy increase in bus patronage too.…
Airport Rail – where to next?
My post a couple of days ago on the potential options for a fast-tracked Airport Railway line generated a lot of interest and debate. Some major points of debate have been the following: Whether we really do need the CBD rail tunnel first.…
Fast-tracking the Airport Line?
The level of support amongst the general public, coupled with the recent reopening of the Onehunga Branch Line, has really put the idea of rail to Auckland Airport back on the agenda in a big way. Mayoral frontrunner Len Brown, as well as Mike Lee (who seems likely to end up with one of the two council seats on the board of the Transport CCO), have thrown their full support behind completing the Airport Line as soon as possible.…
ARTA’s Public Transport Vision
At the July 2010 Board Meeting of NZTA, ARTA made a quite interesting presentation – what they called “Auckland’s Public Transport Strategy”. The whole presentation can be downloaded here (it’s really just a quick Microsoft Powerpoint display), and there are some parts of it that are worthy of sharing – and of further comment.…
Update on PTMA changes
There were quite a few terrible things that happened to public transport last year, thanks to our good friend the Minister of Transport. One of the most depressing were announcements that the Public Transport Management Act – an utterly critical piece of legislation passed in 2008 to create better integration and cost-effectiveness in public transport delivery – was going to be gutted.…
Auckland City Council: more bus lane stupidity
Auckland City Council really has gone out of its way to make stupid decisions on matters relating to bus lanes in recent times. There was its frustrating stubbornness to refuse to accept the fact that its signage was inadequate and confusing, there was its bizarre championing of Tamaki Drive’s conversion from a bus lane to a T2 lane as a success when its own analysis suggested otherwise, and there was of course the Dominion Road debacle, where thankfully it seems as though all ideas of a T2 lane have been banished.…
Fares rise – again
With perhaps the shortest notice ever, we have now learned the extent to which public transport fares are going to rise on October 1st because of the hike in GST from 12.5% to 15%. Here’s ARTA’s media release:
Public Transport fares to rise in line with GST increase
The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) announced today the government’s GST increase will come into effect for all public transport fares in Auckland starting on Friday
1st October 2010.…
Is fare-free a fair go?
It’s been a while since I posted anything so I thought I’d step in while Josh is away to help keep things ticking over, my apoligies for the length and wordiness of this one!
The outcome of last Sunday’s motorway closure in Newmarket left me with some sense of vindication as a public transport advocate.…
July 2010: another good month for PT
ARTA’s monthly business report for July 2010 has been uploaded to their website, and once again it makes good reading for public transport – in terms of patronage growth, improving service reliability and significant progress being made on capital works projects.…
