This is a quick reminder: Today is the registration deadline for the 2016 local body elections. If you’re unsure if you’re registered to vote, please hop onto the Electoral Commission website and check your registration.

Although most people don’t participate in local body elections, they’re as important as general elections in many ways. Local governments’ decisions affect a whole bunch of important things, like:

  • Where you can live (and whether you’ll be able to get a home at all!)
  • Where you can work
  • How you get around
  • The quality and sustainability of the local environment, including air quality, water quality and biodiversity.

So please, if you’re not sure whether you’re registered, head to the Electoral Commission and find out. And if you’re at work, school, or out and about, maybe consider suggesting to others that they do the same.

  1. Don’t forget to enroll on the ratepayer roll if you own a rental in an area you don’t live in. You get to vote where you live and in the other city as well.

        1. In fairness there are districts such as Thames-Coromandel where a significant proportion of rates will be paid by non-residents, so they should at least be having a say over where that money is spent.

      1. It is Sailor boy, not one vote per property and I don’t even think you get to vote in more than one local board but if you own property in a different council area to where you live you do get a vote there as well.

      1. Oh awesome. 🙂 By the way, are you guys doing anything about the stupid AT card blocking issue?

  2. Great to see two term Kaipatiki LB member Richard Hills stepping up for Council for the North Shore.

He’s been great at the local level so I hope he can join Chris Darby at Council for that area. That would be a fantastic lift for the whole city and a welcome balance of age difference at Council level.
