This new video from Heart of the City nicely captures Auckland as it is today – an increasingly vibrant and diverse city that feels like it’s just starting to properly grow up and not be afraid of being a real city.

There really is something quite exciting about the progress Auckland is making. I really do think that with a few tweaks, especially in the area of transport, we can become the most awesome city in the world.

  1. What I have noticed lately is that I can now spend a day in the city and have enough to see and do and find something of interest there. Haven’t felt like that since I was a kid. Getting close to be a proper city.

But the problem with the video, is that *is* from “heart of the City” Everything is from the CBD.

Auckland needs to make sure that it does not portray itself as just a CBD and a whole lot of “other suburbs”
Auckland needs to play up its sub-regions and I am not just talking about the Ponsonby Strip, New Market and Parnell,

    1. There are plenty of videos from Tourism Auckland showing all of Auckland – classy ones focusing on the heart of the city are thin on the ground.

  3. Great video. Caught the train in last Saturday, witnessed a group of oldies putting on what they promoted as ‘the oldest flashmob!’ and of course, the wonderful britomart farmers market. Video makes me keen to travel to the cbd again this saturday, but of course the rail network is shut down. doh!
Beginning to wonder whether I should look at an apartment in the city to enjoy it more.

  4. And just to showcase the cities full splendor all trains are cancelled. Congratulations the wonders of relying on public transport

    1. More KiwiRail uselessness by the sound of things. Cue another round of shifting the blame and hand wringing but no changes or improvement.

      1. Compounded by no space on the buses to pick the slack – I’m the last person allowed on this bus from Ellerslie through to Manukau. Going to be a whole lot more cars taken to work tomorrow!

  5. OK, I thought my old home town of Auckland was neat but recently I witnessed four DXs getting an eastbound coal train away from Otira up the 1 in 35 grade in the dead of night and I realisesd that Auckland was totally shite when it came to railways.

  6. Great video and nice portrait of the city and the places us “urbans” live in. The only problem is that this will make price of flats in the cbd go up, and I’m looking for one at the moment

  7. The pyramids are skylights above the foyer of the twin towers at the corner of Victoria and Queens St’s. (National Bank centre)

Actually you are right. When I popped back to Auckland in Feb I thought I would pay a little visit down the viaduct area – found myself there all day just being facinated with things going on. Auckland has come a long way quickly!

  9. On a similar note to the original video, I’d invite you all to have a look at this! “Soundtrack to Auckland” by the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, with scenes both fair and foul from around this great city

  10. As a frequent user of the inner link I have seen this video many times.
I have yet to spot anyone in it over the age of 60 – and quite possibly over 50 (I’m not sure about one or two people). Is this deliberate or are “older” people merely invisible to this organisation?

  11. ITS alright. It works best when the camera is pointed at horizon level or higher. Having it point down in so many consecutive shots felt quite introverted. Music shots were great. The food shorts were generally great. All the shop window shots wee pretty boring too. The balance of people shots I thought was about right- others may disagree. But I think there should have been more plants and buildings. Nature & Buildings. Less tiny details: they could be any city.
